week 1

I love to learn as much as I can on technology and how it can improve the educational setting, but sometimes it can hinder learning. I was at a conference at Pheasant run that taught a lot about all the things one can add to a physical educational setting. I had the opportunity to observe how other schools were using technology in the classroom. A middle school in Wisconsin was doing a study to try an raise the overall reading scores at their school by implementing technology into the gym class. They were using tablets at the last 10 min of every gym class to get the students to read about the different parts of the body, followed by 10 questions. The 3-month study raised the overall reading scores from D’s to C’s in just a few weeks. This study has turned in to a program that they had been doing for over a year. I found it exciting that not only did the reading scores go up but more so, that they used technology in a gym class and it worked.
Though technology has a big part in education, it also has negative aspects. If technology is not properly supervised it can become a great problem. For example, if kids are giving an assignment on a tablet that has internet access, instead of the student doing the work they can be looking up other subject matter. I believe that technology in education can be of great help if it is being supervised.

  1. There are so many ways that technology can be worked into PE and help change the way the subject is taught! Bringing PE out of a "dark age" is something that technology can really help with!

  2. Great points...however, I am not very current on gym class curriculum. Given the obesity issues and lack of overall physical fitness of today's students , it seems that they could use every minute possible, especially since gym is not a daily in every district. Although the tech activity raised reading scores, do you think using the last 10 minutes of gym time was the best way to accomplish this?
